Margarita sangria

Hell. Bloody. Yeah. It’s summertime! Finally. It’s hot, it’s sunny, everyone’s in a happy mood. That means it’s the season for serving drinks by the pitcher. Sure we can make cocktails one-by-one, but this is not the time or the place. This is a moment for sharing. The moment for margarita sangria.

Oh yes, you read that right. Margarita sangria.

Is this the most Basic AF recipe that’s ever been featured on The Usual Saucepans? Probably. Does anyone really care? Well, that one is up to you. I certainly don’t.

Everyone loves a good sangria session. It’s awesome for a bbq, great for a sunny gathering, even better for kicking back and having a laugh with friends. Basically wherever you want to relax and enjoy some good company this drink is what you need. It’s lively, fruity, zesty, fresh, cool and just all sorts of deliciousness. Basically, the perfect drink for summertime.

I even found some bottles so it’s transportable too, perfect for picnic season. And yes, we’re talking reusable glass bottles here, no need for single use plastic.

Zesty summer goodness

Why go above and beyond the usual sangria staples? Well, because you deserve all the zesty summer goodness. Where ‘normal’ sangria is full of soft fruits, this one is all about the zest and freshness you get from the margarita, plus the fruitiness from the wine and the orange.

It’s great because it’s not anywhere near as sweet as a lot of sangrias can be. The tequila and lime juice keep it really balanced and fresh, the coriander adding another slightly savoury note.

Also, whatever bad happened when tequila was involved?

Being less sweet it means that margarita sangria is perfect for the end of a BBQ (or the middle, or the start). It’s going to add an extra dimension to savoury food as well as being easy to drink on its own. It doesn’t feel like you’re drinking something overly sweet that’s going to give you a sugar high over everything else.

Essentially it’s the perfect way to share some goodness with friends and family this summer, because we all deserve something delicious in our glass, and this margarita sangria is just that.

Got someone that’s driving, under age or just not drinking? Try this raspberry cooler for them.

This is the drink to be making for parties this summer - yes, margarita sangria sounds a little basic/extra/something-that-sounds-like-a-poor-life-choice, but it’s really not. Give this party starter a go and you won’t look back.

Scale

Ingredients

  • a bottle (750ml) of dry white wine
  • 250ml tequila
  • 250ml fresh orange juice
  • 125ml triple sec (optional)

Squeeze your limes to make 125ml of lime juice. Also thinly slice your orange and limes for decoration.

In the bottom of your pitcher, add the lime juice, salt, tequila, triple sec, and half of the coriander. Mix together with a thin spatula. Add in some ice. Pop in the orange and lime slices and the rest of the coriander stems.

Add in the orange juice, followed by the wine. Stir. Top up with ice to fill the pitcher.
