It seems like yesterday that July was under starter’s orders and yet now the baton has already been passed to August. Like a game of rugby sevens, the match was over seemingly seconds after it begun. What a month it has been though. It started out like any other, but by the end there had been cakes, cocktails, I’ve left my job (starting a new one in a couple of days), paid a fleeting visit back to St Andrews and have had an absolute ball volunteering at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. And just as all that madness is coming to an end it’s August and Edinburgh is turning into a hotbed of comedy, music and culture as the Fringe, International Festival and the Royal Military Tattoo kick off. There’s plenty of time to sleep in September, right?
As is customary with Instagrammers Anonymous, we will begin with my Recipe of the Month. I’ll be honest, there is not a lot to choose from this month, since I’ve barely set foot in the kitchen, but I did get cake-cravings earlier this month and ended up making this Pimm’s & Raspberry Cake. Moreish barely scrapes the surface of this one.
My travels occasionally pop up here, and here they are again as I took a little day trip with my friend Fred to St Andrews last week. Yes, in amongst the commutes to Glasgow I used one of my precious days off to go take a look at some of our old student haunts in St Andrews. Like always it turned into a day of eating and drinking our way around town - Forgans for lunch produced an enormous and delicious haggis and beef burger, whilst amaretto ice cream from Janetta’s was just heavenly. Special mention goes to the biology dept. though (my proper home at the uni); they now have this excellent sign outside and the natural history museum was open offering a few trips down memory lane to laugh at the always hilarious examples of bad taxidermy on display.
Finally, as you’re all probably sick to the back teeth of hearing, I’ve been having a great all time as a Clydesider (think Gamesmaker) at the Commonwealth Games. I dread to think of the time I’ve spent on trains lately, but having worked the Opening Ceremony, the Rugby Sevens, a few days of Athletics and going to be working at the Closing Ceremony this evening I’ve met so many people, watched so much amazing sport and generally had an unforgettable time. If you get the chance to do anything like this in future I would strongly encourage you to get involved. We’ll see if I become sporty or not in the coming weeks!
August is now upon us now, and I’m back in Edinburgh for the Fringe, EIF, Foodies Festival and all the general ridiculousness that is going on. I’m not going to bore those who aren’t interested in Edinburgh’s craziness here, so if you want your own little slice of the madness, head over to Edinburgh Editor for photos, reviews and more madness. For everyone else, The Usual Saucepans will hopefully be back on normal form soon enough! Have a great August.
