OK, so here’s the long and the short of it – I’ve quit my job, handed in notice on my flat and I’ve got a plane ticket that’s going to take me part way round the world at the start of January. It’s exciting, terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time. But I’m getting a little ahead of myself.

I opted not to take a gap year or anything like that when I was younger, but I have got the travel bug pretty badly in my life and despite seeing a fair number of places already I always find myself wanting to see somewhere else. Looming large on that list of places are Hong Kong, the Great Barrier Reef and large swathes of New Zealand.

Back in the summer I had a few job interviews – a couple for London, one for Kuala Lumper (as you do…) – and I sat after them wondering what I should do. I’m fortunate to have lots of career options, but at the same time there’s an entire world out there waiting and I quite like adventures.

Can you see where this is going?

As off the 7th of January I will be living out of my suitcase for four months as I go eat my way around a different parts of the globe.

In a move that runs against every part of my list-loving, organisational self I am keeping a relatively flexible plan, but one in which I see parts of the world I’ve long been dying to see (one of the downsides of working for travel clients is the enormous list of places you want to see).

So where will this adventure take me? The brief lowdown list is looking something along the lines of this:

Abu Dhabi
Shanghai
Beijing
Hong Kong
Kuala Lumper
Melbourne
Alice Springs/Uluru
Cairns/ Great Barrier Reef
Brisbane
Sydney
Auckland
Christchurch
Wellington
Singapore

So for the first part of 2016 The Usual Saucepans is going to look a little different. It will probably be even more irregular, and will be part travelogue, part food diary from what I discover along the way. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens!

Hopefully you’ll be joining me virtually for some of this adventure, and if you’ve been to anywhere on the list do let me know any recommendations/must-eats you have.
